Took a long bike ride with my older boys this afternoon and a nephew. Rode 12 miles ... to Red Robin for dinner! After dinner on the way out, I was waiting for the boys and started to talking to Alex, the host at the front door. He was blowing up helium balloons to hand out to kids. He said he heard of a group of kids who had died from sucking too much helium. That was the opening I had been hoping for. "Really," I said. "What do you think happened to them after they died?"
Alex: Laid there until someone found them.
Me: Where do think the dead guys went?
Alex: Oh, I see what you're saying. I don't know. I definitely believe in an afterlife, but I'm not sure what happens. I'm Baptist, but I've heard about a lot of different beliefs and I think there's probably some truth in all of them.
Me: They all can't be true, Alex. Truth by definition is exclusive, because there must be that which is false. Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14)."
Alex: Well, I'd like to check out more of the world and experience things and see what's up.
Me: You better get hurry up, Alex. You don't know how much time you have left. What if you find out too late?
Alex: Yeah, you're right. You never know.
Me: The evidence of the truth is clearly available to you, Alex. The bible is clear that you should base your faith on the evidence, not blind speculation. (Customers were walking in at this point.) Have a great night, Alex. Think about your eternal destiny before it's too late.
Wow. Classic example of what's happening in evangelical Christianity today. Here's a Baptist young man who's unsure about his eternal destiny and the afterlife and what he believes. He's clearly not been grounded in the fundamentals of the faith that distinguish Christiniaty from all other false religions. He's not been taught to think logically and rationally about truth and the mountains of evidence supporting the reliability of the Bible and truth of the Jesus' claim to be God come down to save us from our sins. Lord, save Alex before it's too late.
