Witnessing opportunities abound if you begin to really open your eyes to see them. This one I just couldn't pass up. The analogy was simply too perfect.
Received some new credit cards in the mail for an account we use to buy discount gasoline. Had to call the 800 number to activate them. After the customer service rep helped me activate the account, he then asked me if I was interested in buying debt payoff protection. For a monthly fee, the vendor would pay off any accumulated debt on the card in the event I suffered something happened to me that prevented me from paying the debt. I politely declined the offer but returned the favor.
I asked him if he had eternal debt protection. What, he asked. Eternal debt protection. I don't follow, he said. I explained. You see, every time you sin, Ricardo, you are accumulating a mounting debt that you can never repay. When you die, your debt will come due. The bible says that you will pay your debt with your life, because our sins separate us from God, the source of eternal life. Just as a judge has to impose the penalty that's due under the law in order for a criminal to pay his debt to society, so God has to impose on sinners the debt that is due for our countless sins against Him in violation of His moral law. The good news, I explained, is that God has provided us debt payoff protection. Under God's debt payoff plan, if you repent and turn from your sins and trust in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation, forsaking all else and following Him down the narrow way, God grants you the free gift of His debt payoff protection plan. Jesus' blood pays off your sin debt so you can be declared debt-free on the day of Judgment and granted the privilege of entering into the kingdom of heaven.
I asked Ricardo if he had ever repented and trusted in Christ as his personal lord and savior. Yes, he said. I did that just last Sunday when I went to church. That's great, I answered. And left him with the encouragement to follow Jesus and fish for men (Matt. 4:19). I thanked him for his help.
