I had to stop by Sam's on the way home from work to pick up some items for my wife. As I was leaving, I saw a couple of guys at a table eating pizza. I walked over, handed them each a silver coin gospel tract with the 10 commandments on one side and the gospel on the other.
I asked how they were doing and if they had ever received one of these coins. They hadn't. I explained how the coins could help them know their eternal destiny. They believed they were going to heaven, so I asked them a few questions to confirm whether they had an orthodox view of the gospel. They admitted they had a hard time explaining how it worked. They had pieces of it but couldn't put the whole puzzle together. So, using the coins, I helped them understand how their countless violations of God's law meant that they deserved the penalty for their sins, which eternity in hell, separated from God. We also talked about how God sent His son, Jesus, as Savior of the world (1 John 4:14) to pay the penalty for their sins so they don't have to if they will repent (turn from their sins and cry out for forgiveness) and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Mk. 1:15).
I asked them if they had ever repented and trusted Christ alone for salvation. They said they had. I asked them if they were following Jesus. They said they were.
I asked them if they share the gospel with others. They said they don't. I explained to them that Jesus called his followers to learn how to fish for men (Matt. 4:19), because you can't take anything with you to heaven except yourself and other people.
I asked them if they had any friends who may not be saved. Yes, they said. I asked them if they would try to rescue their friends if they were asleep in a burning home. Yes, the said. Not only that, but they also said they would do that for anyone even if they weren't their friends.
That's right, I said. Just like I did with you tonight. I didn't know if you two were asleep in a burning house or not, but I'm glad I came over to check! I encouraged them to share their coins with others who may not know their eternal destiny and who may not be following the only source of life, Jesus Christ.
